Worldwide internet malfunctions caused by an Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage caused serious disruptions for major platforms, including financial services and those powering sports betting sites.

The epicenter of Monday’s pre-dawn crash was Northern Virginia, the physical location of AWS’ vital US-EAST-1 Region operations. As the largest and most third-party connected AWS hub, the outage rippled out to cause glitches on Facebook, Venmo, FanDuel, and DraftKings.
The Boston-based sportsbook’s support arm took to X to warn bettors early Monday that it was experiencing delays processing withdrawals because of the crash:
Good morning everyone!
Please note that some withdrawals are still slow to process due to the outage overnight. We appreciate the patience!

FanDuel’s customer support message on X was different, according to reports, stating it was aware of bettors “having trouble logging in and fully accessing our platform.”
Panicked bettors responded to the support posts, with a FanDuel user stating: “Can’t see the bet I just placed either. Always something. Took my money though.”
Other FanDuel comments ranged from “my $70 balance has disappeared lmao” and “Ya better give me my money back,” to a stark: “Where is my money?”

Fanatics Sportsbook was also affected, its X support account also taking flak from bettors. One bettor on a seven-day losing streak, who couldn’t bet on a tennis game that won, even mulled switching sportsbooks: “Considering moving everything over to ESPN Bet since they aren’t down at all.”
ESPN Bet runs on parent Penn Entertainment’s proprietary platform, which has built-in redundancy features such as the ability to pivot to other regions, or cloud providers other than AWS, in the event a major hub like US-EAST-1 fails.
AWS, meanwhile, reported that its operations in the US-EAST-1 region were back to full normality by 6:01pm Eastern on Monday.
