Despite local scepticism that a high-speed train between Las Vegas and Los Angeles would become a reality, the wheels are now in motion for the project. Brightline West announced on Monday that traffic on Las Vegas Boulevard will be disrupted for the next three weeks, starting Thursday.
The road will reduce from three lanes to two on October 27. Brightline West said the changes are “essential” in prepping the area for the station’s development and maintaining a functional road in the long term.
the country’s first high-speed passenger rail system
Brightline first revealed its plans to develop a 218-mile high-speed train to connect Las Vegas with Southern California in April 2024. It would be the country’s first high-speed passenger rail system and could cost up to $12bn.
The all-electric service would take about two hours, half the time it takes to drive between downtown Los Angeles and Sin City. Southern California is a major market for Nevada casinos, accounting for almost one-third of visitors annually, making the new rail line a huge boost for Las Vegas Strip casinos.
