Gloves are off
The publicity war between Caesars Palace Times Square (CPTS) and the Broadway League has grown increasingly hostile.
67% of Times Square-area residents opposed
Reports emerged this weekend that the Caesars Entertainment, SL Green, and Jay-Z Roc Nation-backed CPTS damned a new survey claiming 67% of Times Square-area residents are opposed to a casino as “fake news.”
Commissioned by the No Times Square Casino Coalition, which is led by theater and local business owners, the contentious survey polled 400 registered voters from August 28 to September 2 residing in and around the proposed New York casino site.
The vast majority of residents are against a casino, the Tulchin Research poll claims, with over 70% citing increases in crime, traffic congestion, and a fall in quality of life as areas of concern.
CPTS, however, accused Broadway theater owners of fabricating the news in order to “maintain their monopoly on entertainment options in Times Square.”
Groups playing hardball
The Caesars group is playing extreme defense and offense as the December 2025 deadline for the New York Gaming Commission to appoint successful New York casino bidders gets ever closer.
In August, the CPTS put forward celebrity rappers to testify in favor of a Times Square casino. After the new Tulchin survey results, CEO of Roc Nation Desiree Perez continued to defend the CPTS bid. Perez claimed the group has had hundreds of conversations with residents over four years and that they “overwhelmingly support this project.”
last-minute poll from a biased opposition group does not change that reality”
Perez then switched to attack, stating that a “last-minute poll from a biased opposition group does not change that reality.”
CPTS’ strong attack on the Tulchin survey reveals how seriously the group is taking the anti-casino coalition’s efforts to undermine its bid.
“No Times Square Casino” slogans have adorned digital billboards and theatre marquees in Manhattan since August. When celebrities Fat Joe and Charlemagne gave glowing testimonies to a New York Community Advisory Committee (CAC) of the benefits of the CPTS bid, Broadway countered by saying it was unfair to hold the Committee during showtime hours for theater workers.
The anti-casino coalition’s latest action, however, stands to hurt the Caesars bid just as the finish line is in sight. The CPTS bid requires four of the six CAC members to vote yes to its project, or face rejection.
Down to the wire
If Caesars secures the CAC votes, its bid goes forward to the New York Gaming Facility Location Board, which will select three casino licenses by December 1. The NYGC then has until the end of 2025 to award the winning bidders their licenses.
Reviewing Caesars’ bid for the CAC, however, will be representatives for elected New York officials, from Governor Kathy Hochul and the NYC mayor, to a local state senator, and city council member.
The New York Post cited Tulchin Research as directly appealing to such lawmakers to take note of voters “overwhelmingly” rejecting the casino in its latest survey, “despite the casino sponsors’ efforts to sway public opinion.”
“For elected officials, the message is unmistakable: backing this project runs counter to the will of voters,” Tulchin stated.
