Bad all round
Charles Barkley has shared a warning to the NCAA over an impending rule change that would allow student athletes to bet on pro sports. The former basketball star claims it is damaging for college sports and could get athletes in trouble.
The ex-NBA player and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer slammed the change earlier this week from a familiar pulpit at his annual charity golf tournament in Alabama.
“zero faith” in the NCAA
Barkley used his public platform with reporters at Auburn University’s Bruce, Barkley & Basketball Golf Classic to castigate the rule change coming into effect November 1, deeming it “ a joke.” Barkley said he had “zero faith” in the NCAA and that the rule change allowing Division I student-athletes to bet on the likes of the NBA and NFL was the “stupidist sh*t.”
The American sports icon added: “We’ve got to do something about the NCAA.”
Image and players at risk
At the Alabama fundraiser, Barkley headlined with ex-Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl. The Sports Emmy Award-winning analyst told the media that the already tarnished reputation of college sports and the risks posed to student-athletes make the rule highly questionable.
Reporters didn’t have to wait much longer for the ex-NBA star to deliver one of his trademark annual roasts, as Barkley savaged the NCAA, saying the change cranks up the risk of student-athletes betting on their own teams or campuses.
should have their head examined.”
“These are the people we have running college sports, and we want to know why it’s a sh*t show,” Barkley stated at his alma mater’s charity event. “Anybody who thinks that’s a good idea should have their head examined.”
The American sports icon added: “We’ve already got an issue with kids gambling now when they shouldn’t be gambling.”
Don’t touch, it’s hot
Barkley likened the rule change to “putting your kids in the kitchen, putting the stove on,” suggesting that college athletes could get in trouble through criminal activity such as match fixing.
Adding weight to Barkley’s point, 13 basketball players from six universities were placed under investigation for betting against their own teams and match-fixing just last month.
Sports betting, however, has become a major part of US college culture. The NCAA justified giving student-athletes more betting freedom within the vertical to help them “better align with their campus peers.”
