US Congress has questions for NBA Commissioner Adam Silver over the illegal gambling scandal that erupted last week and threw the sport into disrepute. Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers Head Coach Chauncey Billups were the most high-profile arrests as part of the FBI investigation.
he was “deeply disturbed” by the allegations
Commissioner Silver appeared during Amazon’s first NBA broadcast on Friday, explaining the league’s reaction to the scandal. He mentioned that he was “deeply disturbed” by the allegations and said that the integrity of the sport is what matters most to him.
He’ll now need to provide further answers to Congress, after six members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce sent him a letter on Friday requesting a briefing on the matter by October 31. The committee is in charge of overseeing sports and consumer protection. It noted in the letter that it has carried out investigations in the past into the use of steroids in baseball, Olympic Games doping matters, and sexual abuse in the sporting world.
The six Congress members who signed the letter want to know what actions the NBA has taken to limit the possibility of insider information being used for illegal purposes and to see if it’s re-evaluating its partnerships with online gambling operators.
