Undercover detectives in Florida were behind a major gambling sting in Polk County recently that resulted in 28 arrests and the seizure of $100,971, firearms, and 48 gambling machines.
Following up on a tip about illegal machines at an Auburndale store named by the Polk County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) as A-1 Discount Beverage, detectives reported finding the machines “in the back rooms.”
The discovery prompted Operation Bad Odds, with the PSCO taking to X report Wednesday’s arrests:
According to the PSCO, prior to the raids on 12 stores, undercover cops won money playing the illegal gambling machines, which store clerks “handed over concealed in bankers’ bags.”
Assisted by the Florida Gaming Control Commission and with search warrants in place, the PSCO made its move, also catching five men among those arrested who were in the US illegally.
PSCO Sheriff Grady Judd used the arrests to warn and educate potential lawbreakers about playing illegal games.
“People who gamble on machines like the ones we confiscated are being ripped off. These machines are not programmed for fair play,” Judd began.
safe bet that you’re going to jail”
Sheriff Judd added that stores hosting illegal gambling “are at a higher risk of being robbed due to the cash they have on hand.” Ultimately, Judd warned Floridians who either provide such machines or gamble on them, “it’s a safe bet that you’re going to jail.”
