Amelia Kerr’s Unbeaten 232: The World Record

The first one in the list of the highest scores in Women’s ODI by a player is Amelia Kerr. Playing from New Zealand, Kerr is a prominent athlete, widely recognized for her ability to play under pressure. In the match against the Ireland Women’s team, Kerr scored an unbeaten 232 runs in just 145 balls, cementing her name in the Women’s cricket records book.

The record was set on June 13, 2018, when Amelia Kerr displayed her class, blended with technique, in front of thousands of people. In addition to this, Amelia Kerr also holds the record of the youngest player to take five wickets in an innings (5th), along with a fifty and five wickets in an innings.

Belinda Clark’s Pioneering 229: The First Double Century

Similarly, another player in the list of the highest individual scores in Women’s ODI cricket is none other than Belinda Clark. Belinda also holds the women’s cricket record of being the first ever woman to smash a double century in Women’s ODI cricket. On December 16, 1997, Belinda scored 229 runs off 155 balls against Denmark, marking her name in the history books.

In addition to this record, she also holds the record for the fifth most runs in an innings by a captain with 136 runs, the fifth youngest player to score a hundred (20 years and 138 days), and the most consecutive matches as a captain of a team.

Chamari Athapaththu’s Double Strike: A Chase for History

Chamari Athapaththu is another woman cricketer to have a record for the highest runs in Women’s ODI cricket. It has not been long since Chamari smashed an unbeaten 195 runs off 139 balls against the South Africa Women’s team.

The Sri Lankan lions played sensibly in cricket from the very beginning of the innings while they were chasing a target of 302 runs. Also, Athapaththu’s innings was the second-highest individual score in a successful run chase in ODI cricket.

Similarly, she stands in the fifth position of being the woman to play the most consecutive matches for a team (79) and has the highest percentage of runs in a completed inning of 69.26, respectively.

India’s Deepti Sharma Strike

India’s star batter, Deepti Sharma’s clinical strike against the Ireland Women’s team, stands in the fourth position of the highest scores in Women’s ODI cricket. In May 2017, Deepti smashed 188 runs off 160 balls, with 27 fours and 2 sixes, leading from the front to seal the game for India.

With her contribution, India posted a target of 359 runs and won the game by 249 runs. In addition to this record held by Deepti Sharma, she is in the second position for the highest partnership for the eighth wicket (112) and, with 188 runs, has the second-highest maiden hundred in ODI internationals.

Laura Wolvaardt’s Rise: South Africa’s Star Hits 184

South Africa’s hitter, Laura Wolvaardt, also has the record for the highest score in ODI cricket by a player in Women’s ODI. Playing against the Sri Lanka Women’s cricket team, Laura scored 184 runs off 147 balls, including 23 fours and 4 sixes, leading from the front.

But her 184 was not enough, as Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu chased the target of 302 runs as she smashed 195 runs off 139 balls. In the match, the cricket followers witnessed two record-breaking innings from both teams. In addition to this, Laura has also recorded the most hundreds in a series (5) and the most runs in a match on the losing side.

How These Record Innings Transformed Women’s ODI Cricket

With the records of the highest score in Women’s ODI cricket, women’s cricket will certainly experience a shift in the development and popularity of the game. In a world where men are only considered athletes, these women and their records have definitely helped in making cricket popular among the generation that holds the responsibility of treating every sport equally, despite gender.

Similarly, these records will have a positive impact on the player who is thinking of pursuing cricket as a career, especially among the large audience of women. The ICC also seems to be interested in further discussion and talk on how they can uplift women’s cricket, as they have been able to generate a similar amount of revenue as men’s cricket.

Writer’s Take

As a cricket follower, seeing Women’s ODI cricket turning into a beautiful format has made my viewing experience more interesting. Watching up-and-coming players register records among the veteran players is the true testament of the hard work and determination towards the sport. In the future, I would not be surprised if anyone breaks Kerr’s 232 runs or Clark’s 229 runs record to become the highest scorer in Women’s ODI cricket.
