The NHL has become the first major sports league organization in the US to partner with prediction markets platforms. The Wall Street Journal first reported on Wednesday the agreement with Polymarket and Kalshi that will see both firms being able to use NHL branding on their platforms. They will also have access to advertising signage positions during games.
platforms continue to evolve at “a rapid pace”
Talking about the new multi-year deals, NHL Business President Keith Wachtel said that partnering with the two market leaders “provides a tremendous opportunity for the broadest fan engagement during the NHL season.” He also remarked that these platforms continue to evolve at “a rapid pace.”
The NHL has similar agreements in place with sportsbook operators like FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetMGM. These more traditional platforms are now facing growing competition in the predictions space. Some of them are looking at opportunities to expand into the sector, most recently with DraftKings announcing the acquisition of the CFTC-licensed Railbird on Tuesday.
